Maintenance Technician II: Streetsweeper Specialist

The City of Roanoke, Virginia is seeking a skilled Maintenance Technician II to join its team in the Stormwater Division. This role offers a unique blend of technical expertise and hands-on experience.
Job DescriptionThis position primarily involves operating a street sweeper and/or dump truck, handling both automatic and manual transmissions. The operator may also use equipment such as backhoes, heavy front-end loaders, and skid steers for leveling ground surfaces and performing street or construction repairs.
- Operate tractor trailer or other heavy construction equipment
- Perform skilled work in the maintenance of facilities and/or equipment and in the operation of motorized equipment
In addition to operating equipment, you will be responsible for servicing and making minor repairs and adjustments to ensure everything runs smoothly. Accurate record-keeping is crucial, as you'll maintain log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip inspection sheets.
While a Class B CDL is preferred, candidates must be able to obtain a Class B CDL with a tanker (N) endorsement within 12 months of hire. Additionally, you will need to secure a Commercial Learner's Permit within 6 months of hire.
Responsibilities- Services and makes minor repairs and adjustments on equipment
- Performs major and minor cleaning work on storm drain systems
- Repairs catch basin boxes with concrete and brick and/or blocks
- Maintains accurate log sheets, checklists, and pre-trip sheets
The position may require standby work, including some nights, holidays, and weekends, as well as operating heavy and light equipment for snow removal, assisting with special events, and handling other emergency tasks.
RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one to three years related experience and/or training in trades area assigned
- Possession of an appropriate class A, B, or C commercial driver's license with Hazardous Material and tank endorsement
The salary range for this position is estimated to be around $45,000 - $65,000 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. The City of Roanoke offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement plan, and paid time off.
