Job Overview:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Highway Maintenance Technician to join our team at the South Carolina Department of Transportation. In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient maintenance of our highways.

Estimated Salary: $45,000 - $60,000 per year

Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate small motorized equipment on the Hot Crew, such as asphalt kettles, concrete mixers, dump trucks, forklifts, rollers, snow plows, spreaders, sweepers, tractors with brooms, and tractors with mowers.
  • Perform traffic control operations for work zones, including flagging traffic for the safety of the crew and the public during various phases of roadway maintenance.
  • Operate and provide basic maintenance on electric/gas powered tools in various phases of roadway maintenance.
  • Assist in emergency and inclement weather operations and be available for after-hour emergencies.
  • May include working extended hours or 12-hour shifts.

Requirements:

  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
  • Necessary Special Requirement: A Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping, and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
    • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
  • This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
