Position Overview

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a RELAP5-3D Software Developer to enhance our research capabilities. This role involves a 9x80 work schedule, allowing for every other Friday off, and is based at our Collaborative Computing Center. The successful candidate will report to the manager of the Thermal Fluids Systems Methods & Analysis Department.

The specialist will utilize RELAP5-3D and associated software to conduct thermal and design evaluations on both experimental setups and traditional as well as advanced nuclear reactors. A foundational understanding of key reactor phenomenology, including two-phase thermal fluid dynamics, heat transfer in solids, neutron kinetics, and control systems, is essential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct analyses that support the iterative design process, including temperature predictions and final safety assessments.
  • Perform calculations using a combination of RELAP5, Abaqus, and Ansys software.
  • Design, develop, and implement software engineering solutions for complex challenges and significant projects related to RELAP5.
  • Maintain and enhance various systems while developing new software functionalities for RELAP5-3D.
  • Review source code and system design documentation, as well as user reports and other technical artifacts, to generate assessments of code quality, identify potential defects, and recommend improvements.
  • Innovate new methodologies and architectures that align with the organization's mission.
  • Document activities, reports, and existing technologies comprehensively.
  • Contribute to the development of RELAP5-3D training materials.
  • Write and present technical papers representing the laboratory.
  • Apply software engineering principles and theories to complex processes and information visualization.
  • Support project planning and requirements, establishing scope, cost, and schedule estimates for design and development activities.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Level 1: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Level 2: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field with 2 years of relevant experience, or a Master’s or PhD in the same field.
  • Experience with the Linux operating system.
Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is as follows:

  • Level 1: $63,130,284.00
  • Level 2: $75,155,000.00
