About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Design Engineer to join our team at The Shyft Group. As a key member of our DuraMag division, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and validating product design features for our aluminum extrusion and sheet metal products.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop line drawings, renderings, concepts, and basic graphic design artwork for product design features
  • Install products on trucks and confirm desired fitment and performance
  • Provide accurate, timely, and cost-effective engineering solutions that work within manufacturing equipment and assembly capabilities
  • Ensure renderings and concepts meet customer requirements, perform for desired warranty period, and comply with regulatory requirements
  • Create solid models and drawings to achieve defined product attributes
  • Translate customer requirements into engineering specifications
  • Design, test, and verify fitment and performance of purchased items and manufactured products
  • Verify installment procedures and document with pictures, videos, and commentary
  • Create installation instructions to enhance consumer experience
  • Design concepts for various truck-related projects
  • Apply sound engineering methods and practices to support business goals
  • Spearhead engineering change management process for assigned projects
  • Create and manage engineering change requests (ECNs) and approval process
  • Ensure product design quality, manufacturability, and assembly
  • Decide materials and product cost for design concepts
  • Manage Engineering Bill of Material and process Product Specification forms
  • Define validation plans to ensure product quality
  • Identify opportunities to improve financial performance of assigned projects
  • Design manufacturing aids, fixtures, and tooling
  • Benchmark similar truck and automotive products and compare product attributes
  • Support NPI (New Product Introduction) process
  • Create and maintain engineering specifications to continuously improve product quality
  • Partner with Operations to develop standard work procedures for production associates
  • Communicate effectively and often with leadership and staff
  • Ensure projects are delivered in line with expectations for cost, quality, and timing
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Technology
  • Proficient utilizing SOLIDWORKS design software
  • Expertise in design and manufacturing of aluminum extrusion and sheet metal products, including tolerance design and ANSI-Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing
  • Successful history of delivering projects from concept through production
  • Ability and willingness to split time on computer and factory floor (or offsite)
  • Versed utilizing hand and power tools to install products
  • Sound judgment and ability to make timely, and sometimes difficult, decisions
  • Versatility, flexibility, and willingness to work within changing priorities
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 and experience with ERP systems
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experienced in running SOLIDWORKS Analysis software
  • Three or more (3+) years of engineering experience related to design and development of on-highway, heavy truck, specialty, and general truck accessories including hard goods and light electrical
  • Familiarity with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS)
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
  • Truck and/or automotive enthusiast willing to work on all product facets to help bring exciting new truck products to market
