Job Description and Duties

Under the general direction of a Senior Transportation Engineer, the incumbent shall perform a variety of transportation engineering tasks related to the District's pavement and materials engineering program. The incumbent shall prepare Materials and Pavement Design Reports (Materials Reports). Preparation of reports typically includes research and study as-built plans and design parameters, preparing preliminary layout of field exploration program, analyzing logs of test borings, collection of field samples for corrosion and R-Value tests, preparing corrosion recommendation for roadway elements, designing pavement structures, organizing, and interpreting pavement performance/test data, and furnishing conclusions in reports and letters. The incumbent shall identify pavement distress, analyze pavement failures, and recommends corrective strategy. Prepares correspondence, writes reports, attends meetings, takes field trips, coordinates work with others, and prepares technical documents. Performs peer review, prepares, and reviews contract plans, specifications, and estimates. Provides technical support during Construction on Request For Information (RFI), and Contract Change Orders (CCO). Investigates the application of innovative technologies in pavement design and Reviews Encroachment Permit Applications.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
  • Appointment to Range D requires a valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
Working Conditions

Position located in Oakland, Alameda County. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. While at their base of operation, employees will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. However, due to periodic problems with the heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate. Most employees will work in workstations within shared cubicles. Working hours will be set sometime between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Employees may be required to travel to project sites for collecting roadside soil/rock samples and meetings with clients, depending on work demands.
