Position Overview

The Pathology Travel Technician plays a crucial role in patient diagnostics at UW Health. This position serves as a vital link between the collection of tissue samples and the diagnostic process conducted by pathologists.

Key Responsibilities
  • Tissue Preparation: Prepare biopsy specimens for microscopic examination through grossing and dissection, embedding tissues in paraffin, performing microtomy, and applying various staining techniques on glass slides.
  • Instrument Maintenance: Conduct basic maintenance on laboratory instruments, monitor temperatures, manage reagent supplies, and ensure quality control by evaluating test and instrument performance.
  • Troubleshooting: Engage in advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, and problem resolution as necessary.
  • Workflow Coordination: Organize and prioritize tasks to guarantee timely testing and results.
  • Collaboration: Interact regularly with pathologists, residents, and staff across various departments.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum of one year of laboratory experience is required.
  • Previous travel experience is highly preferred.
  • An associate degree in laboratory or medical laboratory technology is mandatory (verification of education is required).
  • Two completed references from recent work environments or assignments are necessary (references must be from supervisors or managers within the last two years).
Schedule Information

The traveler must be flexible and able to work the posted schedule while being interested in the assigned unit.

Unit Specific Information
  • Travelers may be required to float to various floors, particularly those working with infants up to one year of age, based on their skills and experience.
  • Shifts may be scheduled across multiple units depending on current staffing needs.
  • If the primary unit no longer requires the traveler, shifts will be reassigned to fulfill the contract.
