Position Overview

The Travel Pathology Assistant plays a crucial role in the diagnostic process at UW Health. This position involves assisting in the transition from tissue sample collection to diagnosis by a pathologist.

Key Responsibilities
  • Tissue Preparation: Prepare biopsy specimens for microscopic examination through grossing and dissection, embedding in paraffin, performing microtomy, and applying various staining techniques on glass slides.
  • Instrument Maintenance: Conduct basic maintenance on laboratory instruments, including monitoring temperatures and reagent levels, managing supply inventory, and ensuring quality control to assess test and instrument performance.
  • Troubleshooting: Engage in advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, and problem resolution as needed.
  • Workflow Coordination: Prioritize and coordinate workflow to guarantee timely testing and results.
  • Collaboration: Interact daily with pathologists, residents, and both intradepartmental and interdepartmental staff to facilitate efficient operations.
Job Requirements
  • Minimum of one year of laboratory experience is required.
  • Previous travel experience is highly preferred.
  • An associate degree in laboratory or medical laboratory technology is mandatory (verification of education required).
  • Two completed references from recent work environments/assignments (supervisor or manager only for work performed in the last two years) are necessary.
Schedule Information

The traveler must be flexible and willing to work the posted schedule and be interested in the unit.

Unit Specific Information
  • Travelers may be assigned to float to various floors, particularly those working with children up to one year of age, based on competency skills and experience.
  • Shifts may be scheduled across multiple units depending on current staffing needs and locations within the organization.
  • If the primary unit no longer requires the traveler's services, shifts will be reassigned to ensure contract completion.
