Job Summary:

As an Ophthalmic Assistant at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care in our ophthalmology department. You will work closely with our ophthalmologists to perform initial work-ups and specialized examinations of the eye, as well as assist with clinical examinations and surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interview patients to obtain information about their symptoms and document the information in their medical records.
  • Follow established protocols to determine the appropriate tests to perform based on patient descriptions of symptoms and personal inspections of the eye.
  • Use specialized equipment to test patients' vision and condition.
  • Provide test results to providers and bring attention to abnormal conditions.
  • Assist ophthalmologists with clinical examinations and surgical procedures.
  • Apply eye dressings and protective shields as directed.
  • Document examination results and treatments in patient files.
  • Clean and maintain specialized equipment and work areas.
  • Attend to patients requiring emergency care and alert ophthalmologists to their condition.
Requirements:
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working in an ophthalmology practice as an Ophthalmic Assistant.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
  • Formal course in ophthalmology or military training.
  • Ophthalmic Assistant Certificate.
  • Basic Life Support.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to perform IV Fluoroscein Angiography.
  • Formal shadowing program or actual experience in a program for IV insertion for non-nurses.
  • Retina experience.
