Job Purpose

The Lead Mechanic for Heavy Equipment is tasked with overseeing the maintenance and repair of construction machinery, component assemblies, and parts both in the workshop and on-site. This role includes diagnosing issues, ordering parts, preparing technical reports, managing warranty claims, ensuring the upkeep of company assets, and facilitating effective communication with team members. The position operates under the general supervision of the Shop Foreman.

Key Responsibilities

1. Execute repairs on machinery and components, which includes:
- Developing a comprehensive repair strategy and timeline.
- Identifying required parts, materials, and tools.
- Conducting repairs with precision and safety, ensuring quality assurance testing of the repaired components or systems.

2. Complete all necessary documentation accurately and promptly for parts requisition, specialized tool usage, daily service logs, and work order completion.

3. Update the direct supervisor on the status of repairs as needed.

4. Manage the retrieval and return of parts and materials through the company’s parts ordering system.

5. Handle the retrieval and return of specialized tools from the Tool Room, ensuring proper care and usage of essential equipment, including but not limited to air compressors, cleaning tanks, and cranes.

6. Utilize company vehicles and service trucks responsibly, reporting any vehicle issues to the supervisor immediately.

7. Maintain a clean and safe work environment, both in the workshop and within service vehicles.

8. Keep tools and tool carriers organized and in good working condition.

9. Adhere to all company policies and procedures.

10. Undertake additional duties and projects as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

- Understanding of operational and maintenance requirements for heavy-duty construction equipment.
- Awareness of safety hazards and precautions related to the trade.
- Proficiency in using hand and power tools for mechanical maintenance and repair.
- Familiarity with servicing equipment such as A/C recyclers and hydraulic jacks.
- Ability to identify defects in heavy machinery.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent customer service capabilities.
- Professionalism and integrity in all interactions.
- Sound judgment in decision-making.

Education and Experience

- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree in Diesel or Equipment Technology or four years of apprenticeship experience preferred.
- Three to five years of relevant experience.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this role, the employee must be vigilant and is regularly required to communicate effectively. The employee frequently stands, walks, uses hands for various tasks, and reaches with arms. Occasionally, the employee may need to sit, climb, balance, or perform tasks such as stooping, kneeling, or crawling. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds over long distances. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires the operation of a vehicle, and reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Working Conditions and Additional Requirements

This position regularly involves the use of personal or company vehicles for business purposes. Candidates must be physically capable of operating vehicles safely, possess a valid driver’s license, and maintain an acceptable driving record. Employees in this role will be subject to random Motor Vehicle Record checks and drug testing as a condition of continued employment.
