Job Summary

As a key member of our team, the Academic Advisor will provide expert guidance to students on course selection and graduation requirements, ensuring they achieve their academic goals. This role involves coordinating orientations, reviewing test scores and transcripts, and monitoring student progress to identify areas for improvement.

Essential Functions
  1. Oversee the processing of assessment tests to ensure accurate student placement, communicating results to parents and establishing timelines and priorities.
  2. Evaluate and determine how credits transfer between schools, maintaining accurate records of work.
  3. Serve as a liaison for the school, representing our institution to prospective students and families, and attending events to discuss academic opportunities.
  4. Guide students to graduation through meeting credit and assessment requirements, providing insight into course paths and plans based on student interests.
  5. Monitor and support struggling students using various methods, including parent-teacher meetings, tutor resources, and check-ins.
  6. Create and maintain graduation tracking documents for each student, verifying progress and updating course plans as needed.
  7. Update and backfill student transcripts, ensuring accuracy and appropriate credits toward graduation.
  8. Send grade retention and D&F letters at appropriate times, and update student schedules and 4-year academic plans based on final grade evaluation.
  9. Coordinate with college and/or college counselors to ensure post-secondary and/or career paths align with high school plans.
  10. Work with students to create and maintain 4-year academic plans, discussing and reviewing programs and opportunities available to them.
  11. Maintain a schedule that allows students to drop in or make appointments to discuss important academic topics, keeping accurate records of interactions.
  12. Ensure timely communications to students regarding important dates and deadlines, registration, school policies, and course changes.
  13. Participate in meetings, workshops, training, and seminars to convey and/or gather information required to perform functions.
Employment Standards

A bachelor's degree or commensurate experience in academic advising is required, or a combination of training and experience indicating possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed herein.

The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of the JI culture and know the why of what we do, as well as a thorough understanding of graduation requirements and all programs available to students.

They will be highly intuitive and empathetic, with excellent interpersonal skills, a problem-solver, and passionate about connecting with students. The successful candidate will also be patient and resourceful, with excellent organization and attention to detail, and a service-oriented approach.
