Job Purpose

We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Engineer to join our Electric Organization in pivotal roles across various departments. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, designing, and managing electrical distribution and transmission systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement substation engineering and design philosophy, standards, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Provide technical support to various departments, including Engineering, Design, Ops, Construction, and IT.
  • Review and prepare single lines, elementaries, physicals, conduit/cable schedules, lighting, lightning, bill of materials, and manufacturers' drawings.
  • Perform calculations and studies to support substation standards design basis.
  • Develop technical content and implementation of transmission engineering and design philosophy, standards, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Identify, investigate, and qualify approved manufacturers of equipment and monitor their performance, reliability, service, representation, and contribution to the industry.
  • Investigate equipment problems and failures with manufacturers and vendors, and provide recommendations for corrective and preventative actions.
  • Assess sub-transmission and Distribution system performance regarding capacity and reliability, and develop modernization plans as needed.
  • Conduct area studies and develop long-term integrated/area plans for infrastructure development to meet strategic objectives.
  • Develop conceptual project plans that address identified T&D system needs.
  • Provide technical support to internal and external departments for the electric transmission and distribution system's application, operation, and maintenance.
  • Evaluate co-generation interconnection requests for impact on the distribution system and develop plans for suitable connection.
  • Resolve customer issues and operating problems, including fault duty calculations, stray voltage, power quality, motor start, etc.
  • Provide project, field, and real-time engineering for all civil/structural aspects of substation design and construction.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional/multi-discipline teams to ensure successful project completion.
  • Create detailed civil/structural calculations and drawings for foundations and steel and aluminum substation structures.
  • Provide project oversight by directing subcontractors, interpreting and reviewing submittals, and participating in or presenting substation projects at municipal Planning Board and Zoning Board meetings as-needed.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Civil/Structural, or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited school.
  • A Master's degree or Professional Engineer in Training Certificate (EIT) or Engineering (PE) license is preferred for some roles.
  • Minimum 6 years (10+ years preferred) of relevant engineering experience, with specific experience in transmission, distribution, or substation engineering.
  • Strong working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and current design codes, especially the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Proficient Microsoft Office computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant industry practice, standards, and legislation, including technical advancements.
Technical Skills
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, safety standards, and existing electrical design codes, including substation construction and maintenance practices, electric utility practices, substation materials and equipment, grounding and lightning study analysis, IEEE, ANSI, NFPA 70, ASTM, NEC, and NESC codes.
  • Knowledge of various structural and foundation systems required, including steel, aluminum, and reinforced concrete.
  • Knowledge of oil containment systems, flood resilient design, civil site design, stormwater design, and Federal/State/local permitting is preferred.

  • Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • Willingness to travel for meetings, training, and conferences, including potential extended hours for emergencies or system events.
