Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Emergency Preparedness Coordinator to join our team at St. James Parish Government. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring the parish's emergency preparedness and response capabilities are robust and effective.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive emergency response plans, evacuation procedures, and programs to minimize the effects of disasters on the population of St. James Parish.
  • Establish specific goals and objectives for the Emergency Preparedness department, ensuring alignment with the parish's strategic objectives.
  • Supervise testing of all emergency alert and communications systems, ensuring seamless operations during emergency situations.
  • Assist in the management of the 800 MHz Radio System and the Louisiana Wireless Infrastructure Network radio consoles, ensuring optimal functionality.
  • Develop and coordinate procedures to mitigate the impact of disasters on the parish's infrastructure and population.
  • Test operational plans and make necessary adjustments to ensure maximum efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Plan and participate in training exercises to enhance personnel efficiency and preparedness.
  • Implement state and local shelter and evacuation plans and programs, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Prepare reports to federal and state agencies regarding the development, implementation, and progress of local emergency plans.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of plans to resolve identified problems and improve emergency response capabilities.
  • Inventory manpower and material resources from governmental, volunteer, and private sector sources, ensuring optimal utilization.
  • Respond to natural disasters, transportation incidents, and fixed facility incidents involving hazardous materials, providing critical support to the community.
  • Rotate on-call status for emergency response and serve as the primary point of contact for nights, weekends, and holidays.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in a closely related field (a plus but not required).
  • Five (5) years related experience and/or training preferably within a governmental entity.
  • Experience in emergency operations, management, and specific emergency response experience preferred.
  • Proficient in the use of computers, especially Microsoft Office programs (Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel).
  • Excellent public relations and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations and experience with compliance and quality control measures specific to emergency management.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to stand, sit, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Regularly works indoors within an office environment.
  • May work outdoors and be exposed to weather and other environments during emergency operations activities.
