Position Overview


The Department of Pediatrics at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is in search of a seasoned clinician in Critical Care at the Associate Professor or Professor Level to take on the role of Division Chief for Pediatric Critical Care.

The Division Chief will be responsible for overseeing clinical operations, patient care, research initiatives, and educational mentorship.

The advancement and development of faculty within the division is a key priority for the department, presenting significant opportunities for the incoming division chief.

The team provides in-house call, sedation services, and has a backup attending scheduled Monday through Friday.

This innovative academic leader will have comprehensive oversight of the Pediatric Critical Care Division, which includes pediatric/neonatal ECMO and Pediatric Sedation Services, involving both pediatric intensivists and pediatric hospitalists.

They will also engage in ongoing research within the unit.


The role encompasses patient care responsibilities in a state-of-the-art, 20-bed multi-disciplinary Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, which sees approximately 1000 admissions annually.

UNM serves as the state's level 1 trauma center and is the primary referral center for the entire state and surrounding regions.

The program features a full range of pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties, including pediatric surgery, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric ENT, pediatric urology, pediatric orthopedic surgery, and pediatric anesthesiology.

Clinical services include pediatric sedation service (both inpatient and outpatient) and the pediatric/neonatal ECMO program.

UNM caters to a diverse patient demographic and is the sole Level 1 Trauma center for the state.

The Department of Pediatrics and the Pediatric Critical Care Division have a longstanding tradition of delivering exceptional, comprehensive care to the children of New Mexico.

The ACGME-accredited pediatric residency program at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine trains 60 pediatric residents.
Pediatric fellowships at the institution include pediatric emergency medicine, pediatric hospitalist, pediatric child abuse, and neonatology.
UNM is a participant in the NIH CTSA Consortium and is a leader in biomedical research for the state.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for medical licensure in the state of New Mexico.
  • Board Certified/Board Eligible in Pediatric Critical Care.
  • A minimum of ten years of clinical experience.
  • Proficiency in pediatric and neonatal ECMO.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in professional education, teaching, and research.
  • Background in the care of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery and trauma patients.
  • Evidence of leadership roles in academic medicine.
  • Experience in mentoring junior faculty.
