The Museum Associates Inc is seeking a highly skilled Conservation Specialist to join our team as an Andrew W. Mellon Fellow, Interdisciplinary. This role will provide an opportunity to work with a diverse range of art and artifacts from the Museum's permanent collection, with a focus on the art of the ancient Americas.

The successful candidate will have a Master's Degree in Objects Conservation or equivalent experience, and a strong interest in the art history of Indigenous American cultures. They will be responsible for performing treatments on a variety of media, examining works of art to determine condition and need for treatment, and writing and reviewing condition reports.

The Conservation Specialist will also be responsible for providing advisement on environmental conditions for works of art in storage, in transit, and on display, and researching as necessary to determine appropriate treatments. They will work closely with the Conservation Center and Museum staff to apply technical analysis, observations, and art historical research to authenticate and better understand the dating, location of origin, functions, and artistic traditions behind certain ancient American ceramic objects.

The position is eligible for LACMA's comprehensive benefits package, including a pension plan, and offers a competitive hourly rate. The expected hourly rate for this Los Angeles, CA-based position is $, subject to change.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs treatments on a variety of media from the Museum's permanent collection
  • Examines works of art to determine condition and need for treatment, collaborating with paintings, objects, paper, and textiles conservators
  • Writes and reviews condition reports for works of art for exhibitions, outgoing loans, and new acquisitions
  • Provides advisement on environmental conditions for works of art in storage, in transit, and on display
  • Researches as necessary to determine appropriate treatments
  • Performs pertinent treatment on art and accessories with a focus on preventive conservation
  • Uses digital tools and databases to organize and update information in databases, including but not limited to condition reports and photographs
  • Collaborates with the Conservation Center and Museum staff on various levels regarding works of art and preservation
  • Works with conservation and curatorial teams to apply technical analysis, observations, and art historical research to authenticate and better understand the dating, location of origin, functions, and artistic traditions behind certain ancient American ceramic objects
  • At the supervisor's request, coordinates with other departments and remains informed on loans, transit of art, exhibitions, and permanent collection loans, keeping supervisor informed
  • Travel to and from Museum locations across Los Angeles as needed
  • Performs other duties or special projects as assigned
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance
