Job Series: Soil Conservationist

Grade Level: GS-7/9

Location: Flexible within the District of Columbia

Role Responsibilities:

As a Soil Conservationist, you will collaborate with various stakeholders to develop and implement effective conservation strategies. A background in forestry, agriculture, conservation, or natural resources is valuable, and while expertise in soils is beneficial, it is not a strict requirement. A minimum of one 3-credit college course in soils is necessary.

Key Skills:

  • Proficiency in GIS and computer applications is highly advantageous.
  • Assist in collecting and organizing preliminary data for resource assessment, contributing to comprehensive conservation plans for farms and forests.
  • Utilize GIS and field tools to evaluate field data and align with customer objectives.
  • Develop management plans and documentation for conservation contracts.
  • Conduct monitoring and evaluation of conservation practices in accordance with established plans and schedules.

Educational Requirements:

Basic Education: A degree in soil conservation or a related field such as agronomy, soil science, forestry, agricultural education, or agricultural engineering is required. The program must include at least 30 semester hours in a natural resource or agricultural discipline, with a minimum of 12 semester hours in soils and crops or plant science.

Combination of Education and Experience: Candidates may also qualify with a combination of education and experience, including at least 30 semester hours in relevant disciplines and appropriate professional experience.
