Job Responsibilities and Qualifications

The HCA Nurse Residency Program at Portsmouth Regional Hospital equips you with the necessary tools to thrive in today’s healthcare environment. This compensated program facilitates your transition from academic learning to practical application through a structured series of educational experiences, including:

  • Advanced training in a specialized clinical area.
  • Monthly educational workshops.
  • Preceptorship with an experienced facility mentor.
  • Skill assessment through hands-on simulations.
  • Guidance from seasoned nursing leaders.

Flexible Start Dates

This role may involve day or night shifts, to be discussed during the interview.


The RN Resident is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care in alignment with departmental needs and professional standards. Collaborating with medical professionals and care team members, the RN Resident provides individualized, compassionate care using established nursing frameworks such as "Assess, Perform, Teach, and Manage." The RN Resident acts as an advocate for patients and their families, ensuring an exceptional patient experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate patient conditions upon admission and throughout each shift, promptly identifying and reporting any changes.
  • Execute procedures and monitoring as directed by medical providers, ensuring accurate documentation of care.
  • Administer prescribed medications, monitoring patients for therapeutic responses and addressing any adverse reactions.
  • Deliver exceptional care by responding promptly to patient requests and proactively addressing their needs.
  • Educate patients, families, and caregivers about medical conditions, treatment plans, medications, and follow-up care, simplifying complex medical terminology for clarity.

Qualifications Required:

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within one year of employment.
  • Other certifications may be required during employment.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse License or Graduate Nurse status in the state.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Some travel may be necessary for training purposes.
