Key Responsibilities
  • Execute various tasks related to the fabrication of optical components, including profiling, cutting, milling, grinding, beveling, blocking, polishing, edging, cleaning, and testing using the appropriate machinery and tools.
  • Produce optical components in a manufacturing setting by loading and aligning components on fabrication machines, adjusting setup parameters based on crystal orientation.
  • Prepare machinery for operation by positioning and securing polishing fixtures, preparing tooling, and monitoring polishing slurries.
  • Simultaneously operate multiple machines to maximize equipment uptime and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).
  • Maintain in-process specifications and controls, determining the sequence of operations according to work instructions.
  • Utilize various measurement tools, including micrometers and height gauges, to assess part dimensions.
  • Employ a range of metrology and inspection instruments to evaluate and verify the accuracy and quality of optical components (such as x-ray goniometers, interferometers, autocollimators, comparators, etc.).
  • Monitor manufacturing processes and collaborate with engineering to assess and implement process enhancements.
  • May construct or modify equipment used for testing precision optics and guide others in their operation.
  • Assist the engineering team in developing new processes and drafting work instructions.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of equipment through scheduled preventative maintenance.
  • Actively contribute to fostering a collaborative and productive team environment.
  • Perform additional tasks as required by business operations.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two to five years of experience in an advanced manufacturing environment.
  • Prior experience in optical crystal fabrication and/or optical polishing is preferred.
  • Experience with precision hand tools such as micrometers and calipers is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with equipment like STS Inner Diameter (ID) Saws, K&S Saws, DCM Grinders, CNC Machines, Sine Plates, Polishing and Beveling spindles, CP Lappers, and/or Double-Sided Lapping/Polishing Equipment is preferred.
  • Strong manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination are essential.
  • Ability to perform frequent and sustained standing and possess sufficient visual acuity for reading computer screens and documents.
  • Proficient in operating and utilizing microscopes and computers.
  • Basic understanding of shop mathematics, including ratios, graphs, algebra, and geometry.
  • Capability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in training others and developing process improvements.
  • Background in documenting processes and creating work instructions.
  • Experience in conducting root cause analysis and recommending solutions.
  • Familiarity with Lean/Continuous Improvement methodologies.
