Senior Underwriting Manager

The Senior Underwriting Manager will play a key role in guiding and mentoring a team of Environmental Underwriters. This individual will contribute to the growth and profitability of the organization through marketing, underwriting, and managing the Environmental production underwriters. The successful candidate will be responsible for budgeting, marketing, risk assessment, and broker management for the group.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership: Provide formal guidance, mentorship, and coaching to underwriters in both technical and professional skills. Responsible for talent processes, including selection, development, and performance management, and makes compensation recommendations for assigned staff.
- Service Value Proposition: Understand and articulate the specialized services Liberty Mutual can offer Environmental liability Insureds and how they compare to those provided by competitors.
- Documenting the Deal: Direct reports document files in a way that reflects a solid thought process and decision-making through comprehensive account reviews, signoffs, and referrals.
- Continuous Improvement: Actively participate in continuous improvement by fully engaging in daily huddles, generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and work principles, participating in problem-solving activities, and using continuous improvement tools to support the team.
- Marketing: Contribute to the development of marketing plans, product analysis, services, geographic focus, and broker intelligence. Establish and maintain broker strategy, building relationships to facilitate the marketing of Environmental Liability products.
- Effective Communication: Collaborate with other product line underwriters, managers, and claims analysts to provide comprehensive customer service.
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent training plus at least 5 to 7 years of relevant and progressively more responsible production Underwriting experience.
- Requires 1-2 years of previous people management/supervisory experience.
- Requires an advanced knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, procedures, and techniques, including, but not limited to, coverage issues, product lines, marketing, computers, and product competition within the marketplace.
- Advanced knowledge of Environmental Liability products.
- The ability to effectively interact with brokers and internal departments.
- Strong verbal and written communications, and organizational skills.
- Strong negotiation, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Degree in Business or equivalent.
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate high-impact underwriting risks within scope of responsibility.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information.
