Position Overview:
The George Washington University Libraries (LAI) serves as a pivotal force in fostering innovation and facilitating educational growth. As a vital component of the university, we unite a diverse array of faculty, students, and staff within a collaborative and vibrant intellectual environment, aimed at enhancing research, teaching, and learning experiences. The Academic Commons, located at the entrance of Gelman Library, acts as the central hub for learning assistance, providing essential support to the GW community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
Role Summary:
The Manager of Academic Commons will be responsible for overseeing the organization and execution of review sessions and group tutoring opportunities facilitated by course-based undergraduate learning assistants (ULAs). This role involves active collaboration with faculty and academic department leaders to manage the recruitment, hiring, and supervision of ULAs. In partnership with the Academic Commons team and academic departments, the Manager will design and implement training programs for ULAs, ensuring the delivery of high-quality educational support. Additionally, the Manager will spearhead outreach initiatives to foster new partnerships across campus, serving as the primary contact for faculty and departments interested in utilizing Academic Commons resources.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with faculty and department leaders to recruit, hire, and onboard course-based learning assistants.
- Design, plan, and conduct training sessions aimed at the professional development of course-based learning assistants.
- Manage the scheduling system for review sessions and drop-in tutoring, serving as the main point of contact.
- Monitor student participation in review sessions and tutoring, providing detailed attendance reports.
- Deliver exceptional customer service to patrons, integrating customer support principles into training protocols.
- Act as a resource for other Academic Commons staff and programs, providing support as necessary.
- Address complex issues that may require research or escalation to the Director of Academic Commons.
- Assist the Director in managing the budgetary aspects of the ULA program.
- Contribute to the development of Academic Skills for Success modules and other resources to enhance student success.
- Represent the Director in their absence and perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess a high school diploma or GED with at least four years of relevant professional experience, or a Bachelor's degree in a related field. The degree must be obtained by the start date of employment. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience will also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in academic support programming within an educational environment.
- Familiarity with learning assistance association training programs and certifications.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Excel and a willingness to learn additional analytical tools.
- Ability to utilize presentation and graphic design software.
- Excellent organizational skills with a keen attention to detail.
- Proven experience in managing or coordinating projects, programs, or teams.
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is $53,000 to $78,108.53. The George Washington University offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance, paid time off, retirement savings, tuition assistance, and various voluntary benefits.
Work Environment:
This position is based at the Foggy Bottom campus and requires onsite work. The work schedule is Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with hybrid telework options available.
