We are seeking a highly skilled Benefits Specialist II to join our team at the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a key member of our social services team, you will be responsible for determining and re-determining eligibility for financial assistance, food stamps, medical assistance, and other social services benefit programs.
Key Responsibilities- Interview clients to gather information and re-evaluate their eligibility for assistance
- Explain benefit programs and determine reasons and need for assistance
- Process applications for financial assistance and diversion, and determine eligibility using automated systems and manual methods
- Interpret policies and procedures applicable to various programs
- Monitor cases for changes in recipient circumstances and implement changes to reflect benefit levels within guidelines
- Evaluate employability status of clients and explore potential sources of income
- Refers clients to service workers as needed, prepares reports, and maintains client records
- Identifies possible fraud and makes appropriate referrals
- Explains programs and rights/responsibilities of applicants and recipients
- Computes assistance plans and determines allowances for special circumstance items
- Provides applicants or recipients with information about other agencies where they may go for services as needed
- Working knowledge of practices of public service organizations, economic and basic human behavior, financial assistance programs, and eligibility requirements for social service assistance
- Mathematics skills to calculate percentages, formulas, and averages to solve mathematical problems
- Interviewing techniques such as data collection and investigation
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad spectrum of individuals, including customers, employers, courts, and medical professionals
- Ability to analyze information and determine missing information and gaps
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions and use various types of automated technology
Same as required in Benefit Program Specialist I with experience in benefit programs, use of computer software and hardware, and completion of required Benefit Programs training OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
