Role Summary

The Senior Surgical Technologist operates under the guidance of a surgeon and registered nurse to ensure the safe and efficient execution of surgical procedures. This role is crucial in maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring that all equipment is functioning correctly, and that surgical procedures are performed under optimal conditions to enhance patient safety.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Execute technical skills across various surgical specialties, adhering to established standards and practices.
  2. Ensure proper maintenance, assembly, and sterilization of specialized instruments.
  3. Adhere to aseptic techniques, proactively identifying and addressing any contamination issues.
  4. Conduct surgical counts, following protocols for discrepancies and reporting them as necessary.
  5. Establish and maintain a sterile field, ensuring the surgical team adheres to sterile practices independently.
  6. Assist in the identification, preparation, and handling of surgical specimens.
  7. Participate in the planning and organization of instruments and supplies for optimal accessibility during procedures.
  8. Support the surgeon by demonstrating a thorough understanding of relevant anatomy and surgical requirements.
  9. Prepare effectively for cases, addressing any deficiencies in instrument needs.
  10. Adapt scrubbing procedures based on specific case information and communicate effectively with the surgical team.
  11. Manage inventory and storage of supplies under the guidance of Surgical Services leadership.
  12. Serve as a mentor and role model for new team members and peers, participating in training and performance evaluations.
  13. Identify and report any defective instruments or supplies, assisting with the restocking of operating rooms.
  14. Support registered nurses during the intraoperative phase of care.
  15. Contribute to data collection for research initiatives under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  16. Operate complex surgical equipment, troubleshooting as needed.

Qualifications

Education:

- High School Diploma or GED

- Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program, or a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or equivalent experience with 5+ years in the field.

Licensure/Certification:

- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers

- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery (TS-C) certification

Experience:

- Minimum of 3 years in a surgical technology role.

Skills and Abilities:

- Successful completion of service-specific competencies.

- Strong communication and customer service skills.

- Excellent organizational and prioritization abilities.

- Capability to function effectively as a mentor and team player.

- Availability for on-call duties as required.
