Position Overview

The ASL Academic Support Specialist plays a crucial role in assisting both educators and learners within a classroom and laboratory setting. This position is dedicated to enhancing student engagement and academic success while also managing clerical and administrative responsibilities in support of the Human Services Department. The specialist will provide tutoring in American Sign Language (ASL) and maintain accurate student records.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Classroom Assistance

  • Offers support to faculty, adjunct instructors, and students. Prepares laboratory stations as requested and assists with class coverage when necessary. Coordinates scheduling for classrooms and equipment while ensuring proper maintenance of instructional tools. Aids in the collection and organization of educational materials. Collaborates with faculty to enhance course development, assessments, and other instructional needs. Undertakes additional tasks to support teaching across lecture, lab, and online classes. Creates visual aids and evaluates student assessments.
  • Provides tutoring for students enrolled in American Sign Language courses, helping them to enhance their communication skills in ASL. Addresses general inquiries, supplies information to students, and acts as a liaison to foster positive relationships between students and faculty.
Administrative Support
  • Delivers technical and administrative assistance to faculty, adjuncts, and the department chair. Coordinates scheduling for classrooms and equipment, while maintaining records related to ASL operations and ensuring the confidentiality of student information.
Promoting a Respectful Environment
  • Encourages and sustains a safe and inclusive atmosphere for faculty, staff, students, and community members.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participates in all departmental meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma with the ability to communicate fluently in American Sign Language. Experience in mentoring or tutoring ASL learners is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession of a State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or the ability to access required work sites.
Physical Requirements
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions. The role involves regular data entry, periods of sitting, standing, and walking. The employee will engage in verbal or manual communication with others both in person and via telephone. Close vision is necessary for computer tasks, and occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required.
Work Environment
  • Standard office conditions with regular exposure to moderate noise typical of business environments. Travel to regional campuses may be necessary.
