Position Overview

The Academic Support Specialist in the Social and Human Services (SAHS) program plays a crucial role in providing both technical and administrative assistance to the faculty within the Human Services Department. This position is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience for students by supporting their academic journey and facilitating their engagement with college resources.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Student Support

  • Offers academic guidance and support to students enrolled in the SAHS certificate program, helping them understand available college services and social programs. Oversees student activities and serves as a liaison for external practicum placements, which may involve clerical tasks, physical duties, and interaction with diverse age groups. Administers examinations and travels to various practicum sites to provide necessary support.
Collaborative Engagement
  • Contributes to course development by providing feedback to instructors. Works closely with faculty to plan and prepare lectures, including writing lecture notes and organizing educational materials. Creates PowerPoint presentations and assists new adjunct faculty by sharing departmental standards and course-related information. Addresses general inquiries from students regarding course enrollment, graduation criteria, and other academic requirements. Supports the teaching process across various formats, including lectures, labs, and online classes, by preparing visual aids and assisting with exam grading.
Administrative Duties
  • Provides essential technical and administrative support to faculty, adjuncts, and the department chair. Coordinates the procurement of equipment, supplies, and course materials, and organizes student events and graduation ceremonies. Maintains confidentiality in managing student academic, enrollment, and financial aid records.
Diversity and Inclusion
  • Promotes a respectful and inclusive environment for faculty, staff, students, and community members.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Participates in departmental meetings and training sessions.
Qualifications
  • Currently pursuing an Associate's Degree in Behavioral Health, Special Education, Social Work, Developmental Disabilities, or a related discipline.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession of a State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or the ability to access necessary work sites.
Physical Demands
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions. The role requires regular digital dexterity for data entry, periods of sitting, standing, and walking, as well as verbal or manual communication with others. Close vision is necessary for computer tasks, and occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required.
Work Environment
  • Standard office setting with moderate noise levels typical of business environments. May require travel to off-site locations for practicum supervision.
