Job Summary

The Utility Services Worker II/CDL is a critical member of the DC Water team, responsible for performing various tasks to support the operations of the water distribution and sewer collection systems. This role requires a strong understanding of the systems and the ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs manual tasks to support general maintenance and repair activities of the water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Investigates customer complaints, repairs and maintains mains, service lines, laterals, taps, fire hydrants, and valves, meters, and cleans catch basins.
  • Assists in inspecting customers' plumbing and illegal connections, cross-connections, tampered-with meters, or seals.
  • Conducts inspections and investigations of the water and sewer systems in response to water leaks, sewer problems, service backups, service breaks, meter malfunctions, billing issues, and other customer complaints.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment, including trailers, dump trucks, jet vacs, combination sewer cleaners, compressors, and tractors with a front-end loader and other attachments.
  • Assists in preventive maintenance on equipment, facilities, and stations as directed, and checks stations, sewer lift stations, which involves reading instrumentation and responding to various situations that may arise.
  • Participates in the collection of samples and performance of field-level water quality analysis in water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Assists in the setup, operation, and maintenance of safety-related equipment according to DC Water's safety procedures and SOP.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate and two (2) years of progressive experience directly related to work involved with repairing and maintaining water distribution and/or sewer collection systems.
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License, Commercial Driver's License - Class B with air brakes, Tanker's N Endorsement.
  • Skill in the use of the full range of tools and equipment of the trade, including backhoes, dump trucks, and compressors.
  • Ability to determine appropriate methods, equipment, materials, and techniques required for performing work assignments.
  • Ability to perform tasks in a safe manner.
  • Ability to read maps.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Working Conditions

The position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 90 pounds) on a highly frequent basis, and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are routine risks of exposure to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution. The position may involve periodic risks of exposure to raw sewage, chemical substances, and physical trauma of minor nature such as cuts, bruises, and minor burns. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) will be provided to ensure the safety of the employee.
