Job Summary

The Utility Services Worker III/CDL is a critical role within DC Water, responsible for performing highly skilled tasks to support the operation and maintenance of the water distribution and sewer collection systems. This position requires a strong understanding of complex manual and technical tasks, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform the full range of complex manual and technical tasks to support the general maintenance, repair, and replacement activities of the water distribution and sewer collection systems.
  • Perform emergency and scheduled work, including shutting off water mains, repairing and replacing mains, service lines, taps, valves, hydrants, etc.
  • Investigate and relieve obstructed building sewers, repair and construct sewer systems, and inspect public sewer pipelines.
  • Distribute and serve notifications to customers, including notices on service interruptions, water shut-offs, and other verbal and written communications.
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, including trailers, dump trucks, jet vac combination sewer cleaners, compressors, and tractors with front-end loaders and other attachments.
  • Read and interpret engineering plans, maps, designs, and drawings, and prepare as-built drawings and system updates.
  • Collect samples and perform field-level water quality analysis in water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
  • Comply with applicable safety rules and regulations, and ensure the proper execution of construction work following acceptable practices and industry standards.
Requirements
  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate and four (4) years of progressive experience directly related to work involved with investigating, repairing, and maintaining water distribution and/or sewer collection systems.
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License, Commercial Driver's License - Class B with air brakes, Tanker's N Endorsement.
  • Skill in the use of the full range of tools and equipment of the trade, including backhoes, dump trucks, and compressors.
  • Ability to determine appropriate methods, equipment, materials, and techniques required for performing work assignments.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, maps, designs, and drawings.
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
