JOB SUMMARY
This role is crucial for upholding federal, state, and local regulations while ensuring the safety of individuals and property.
Key Responsibilities
• Conduct regular patrols throughout the community to identify and prevent unlawful activities and traffic infractions; maintain public order in both commercial and residential neighborhoods.
• Respond to a variety of incidents requiring police intervention, including serious crimes such as homicides, sexual offenses, thefts, and domestic disputes.
• Attend to traffic collisions and emergency medical situations; secure the area, provide necessary aid, and request additional support when needed.
• Carry out initial investigations into traffic incidents and criminal occurrences, which includes interviewing victims, witnesses, and gathering pertinent evidence.
• Detain, arrest, and process individuals suspected of committing offenses.
• Offer support and backup to fellow officers and emergency responders as required.
• Assist motorists in distress.
• Direct traffic during special events such as parades, funerals, and school crossings.
• Provide testimony in court as necessary.
• Execute court orders and warrants.
• Complete all mandated documentation, including reports of accidents and incidents.
• Maintain and inspect assigned patrol vehicle, uniform, and equipment.
• Act as a School Resource Officer when designated; oversee school premises and activities to ensure security and deter criminal behavior; engage with students, parents, and school staff.
• Perform additional related duties as assigned.

Guidelines include federal and state laws, traffic regulations, municipal ordinances, judicial decisions, constitutional standards, training manuals, and departmental policies. These guidelines are generally clear but may require interpretation in practice.
WORK COMPLEXITY
• The role encompasses diverse law enforcement tasks. The variety of responsibilities and the potential for emergencies add to the complexity of the position.
• The primary aim of this role is to safeguard life and property, enforce laws, and support other departmental functions as needed. Effective performance contributes to crime prevention and the protection of the community.
CONTACTS
• Interactions typically involve co-workers, other city personnel, emergency service providers, judicial system staff, attorneys, judges, medical professionals, and the general public.
• These contacts are generally for the purpose of exchanging information, providing services, interviewing individuals, and resolving issues.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
• Familiarity with applicable federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, search and seizure regulations, municipal ordinances, and departmental policies.
• Understanding of criminal investigation methods and practices.
• Knowledge of traffic accident investigation techniques.
• Awareness of law enforcement principles and practices.
• Familiarity with the geography of the city.
• Understanding of the judicial system and court procedures.
• Proficiency in computer usage.
• Skill in operating police vehicles, firearms, and emergency equipment.
• Competence in using communication devices and radar equipment.
• Ability to restrain individuals without inflicting harm.
• Proficient in both oral and written communication.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
• The work involves sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, and other physical activities. The employee may need to lift objects of varying weights and utilize equipment requiring dexterity.
• The position requires working indoors, in vehicles, and outdoors, with exposure to various weather conditions and potentially hazardous situations. Protective gear is necessary.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Applicants must be at least 19 years old.
• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position.
• Must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Alabama.
• Ability to meet current standards set by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
• Capability to achieve APOSTC certification following established guidelines.
• Applicants must successfully complete the APOST agility/ability test prior to attending an Alabama academy.
