Description

This role is crucial for upholding federal, state, and local regulations while ensuring the safety of individuals and property.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts regular patrols to identify and prevent criminal behavior and traffic infractions; maintains order in both commercial and residential neighborhoods.
  • Responds to a variety of criminal incidents requiring law enforcement action, including serious offenses such as homicides, sexual assaults, and property crimes.
  • Assists at traffic incidents and emergency medical situations; secures the area, provides necessary aid, and requests additional support when needed.
  • Performs initial investigations into traffic collisions and criminal occurrences, which includes interviewing involved parties, gathering evidence, and securing the scene.
  • Detains, arrests, and processes suspects as required.
  • Offers support and backup to fellow officers and emergency responders as necessary.
  • Assists motorists in distress.
  • Directs traffic during special events, ensuring safety and order.
  • Provides testimony in court as needed.
  • Serves legal documents and executes warrants.
  • Completes all necessary documentation, including reports on incidents and accidents.
  • Maintains and inspects assigned patrol vehicle, uniform, and equipment.
  • May serve as a School Resource Officer, overseeing school premises and activities to enhance security and deter criminal acts; engages with students, parents, and faculty.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Essential Knowledge
  • Understanding of applicable federal and state laws, criminal and traffic codes, and departmental policies.
  • Familiarity with investigative techniques and law enforcement practices.
  • Knowledge of traffic accident investigation methods.
  • Awareness of the local geography and community.
  • Proficiency in computer usage and communication equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Supervision
The Police Sergeant provides general guidance and oversight, reviewing work for adherence to established procedures and accuracy.

Work Environment
  • Responsibilities include a variety of law enforcement tasks, often in emergency situations, contributing to the complexity of the role.
  • The primary goal is to safeguard life and property while enforcing laws and supporting departmental functions.

Physical Requirements
  • Work involves various physical activities, including sitting, standing, running, and lifting objects of varying weights.

Qualifications
  • Must be at least 19 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Experience in law enforcement principles is preferred.
  • Valid driver's license issued by the State of Alabama is necessary.
  • Must meet standards set by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
  • Certification as a police officer in Alabama or eligibility for certification through reciprocity.
  • Background checks and drug testing are mandatory.
