Position Overview:
The Patient Access Coordinator I is responsible for facilitating the smooth and organized admission process for both inpatient and outpatient services. This role ensures the collection of precise patient information while educating patients about hospital policies and procedures.
About Alta Hospitals:
Alta Hospitals operates a fully accredited acute care facility, equipped with a total of 177 beds, including 120 beds for general acute care, 15 intensive care beds, and 42 pediatric sub-acute beds. Our pediatric sub-acute unit is one of only six in California, dedicated to providing long-term care for patients up to 21 years of age who require specialized support, including ventilator care and nutritional assistance.
- Patient Registration: Responsible for registering all patients in accordance with departmental protocols. Accurately completes all necessary admission forms, including consent documents. Prior to entering patient data into the system, verifies the medical record status using the Master Patient Index function. Ensures the accuracy of patient names, chief complaints, and other relevant information. Prepares financial folders for patients and distributes copies to the appropriate departments.
- Insurance Verification: Ensures that each account is billable and that pre-certification requirements are fulfilled as necessary. Communicates with physician offices to gather required pre-admission information. Confirms that patients have the necessary authorizations for scheduled procedures. Clearly explains hospital policies regarding payment for services, collects payments, and issues receipts. Requests and verifies identification and insurance cards during the admission process, ensuring copies are obtained.
- Communication and Operations: Operates the PBX system, answering all incoming calls and transferring them to the appropriate department or patient room professionally. Performs paging duties through overhead and other hospital systems as required, including announcing and reporting hospital emergency codes.
- Physician Authorization: Ensures that physicians are authorized to admit patients and appropriately refers any physicians on the delinquency list to the hospital administrator or designated personnel.
- Safety and Confidentiality: Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff. Upholds the confidentiality of patients, families, employees, and visitors at all times.
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum of one year experience in a customer service role
- Basic understanding of medical terminology
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Strong time management abilities
- Capability to multitask and maintain an appropriate work pace
- Exceptional customer service skills
- Proficiency in computer usage
- Demonstrated customer service skills relevant to the position
- Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card within 30 days of hire (specific locations only)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in healthcare settings
- One year of experience in an admitting office or as a PBX operator
- Bilingual skills to effectively communicate with patients and families
Compensation: Minimum - $28.00 | Maximum - $28.00
