Job Overview

Position Summary:

This role includes a sign-on incentive for qualified Licensed Class B Drivers with necessary Bus and Passenger Endorsements.

The bus operators at Blake School serve as a vital connection within the community, ensuring the safe transit of students to and from educational facilities. The position is structured around a 20-hour workweek, divided into two shifts of two hours each day, with opportunities for additional charter assignments as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to the Transportation Manager
  • Follow instructions from the transportation dispatcher
  • Safely transport school-aged children to and from their homes, designated pick-up locations, and school campuses
  • Provide transportation for students to field trip destinations
  • Ensure the safety and security of all passengers, including directing and assisting in emergency evacuations
  • Maintain cleanliness and fuel levels of the buses
  • Conduct thorough pre-trip inspections of the school buses
  • Participate in monthly safety training sessions
  • Engage in ongoing evaluations of driving skills and emergency procedures

Team Collaboration:

The bus operator is expected to provide constructive feedback to management regarding the efficiency of assigned routes. Additionally, collaboration with fellow transportation team members is essential for the smooth operation of the transportation services.

Qualifications:

  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to engage with students and parents in a courteous and professional manner
  • Minimum age of 21 years
  • Strong commitment to punctuality, teamwork, and mutual respect
  • Successful completion of a criminal background investigation
  • Clean driving record
  • Ability to meet medical certification requirements to operate a school bus as mandated by the Department of Transportation and Blake School
  • Possession of a Class B commercial driver's license with passenger and school bus endorsements, or willingness to obtain one (training available for suitable candidates)
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with children and their guardians

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in professional driving, particularly in a school bus setting
  • General knowledge of mechanical operations and familiarity with Minnesota School bus regulations

Physical Demands:

  • Capability to sit for extended periods, up to three hours
  • Ability to lift items weighing up to 40 lbs
  • Physical capability to bend and stoop
  • Must pass Blake School's Driver Ability Assessment
  • Ability to perform duties in various weather conditions
  • Capacity to evacuate students from the bus in emergencies
  • No physical impairments that hinder the operation of a school bus
  • No medical history that would interfere with the ability to drive safely
  • Must comply with mandatory drug testing protocols prior to employment and throughout the duration of employment
