Position Overview

This role includes a sign-on incentive for currently licensed Class B Drivers with Bus and Passenger Endorsements.

The bus operators at The Blake School serve as a vital connection within the community, ensuring the safe transportation of students to and from educational facilities. The position is structured around a 20-hour workweek, with daily responsibilities divided into two 2-hour route shifts, along with potential additional charter assignments as needed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Report directly to the Transportation Manager
  • Follow directions from the transportation dispatcher
  • Safely transport school-aged children to and from their homes, designated pick-up points, and school campuses
  • Provide transportation for students to field trip locations
  • Ensure the safety and security of students, including managing bus evacuations when necessary
  • Maintain cleanliness and fuel levels of the buses
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections of school buses
  • Participate in monthly safety training sessions
  • Engage in ongoing evaluations of driving and emergency procedures
Team Collaboration

The bus operator is expected to provide constructive feedback to management regarding the efficiency of assigned routes. Additionally, collaboration with fellow transportation team members is essential to enhance the overall operations of the transportation department.

QualificationsRequired
  • Excellent customer service skills, with the ability to interact positively with students and parents
  • Minimum age of 21 years
  • Strong commitment to maintaining schedules and fostering teamwork
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check
  • Clean driving record
  • Ability to meet medical certification requirements to operate a school bus as mandated by the Department of Transportation
  • Possession of a Class B commercial driver's license with passenger and school bus endorsements, or willingness to obtain one (training available for suitable candidates)
  • Ability to effectively communicate and engage with children and their families
Preferred
  • Previous experience in professional driving, particularly with school buses
  • General mechanical knowledge and familiarity with Minnesota school bus regulations
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit for extended periods, up to three hours
  • Capability to lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to bend and stoop as needed
  • Pass the Driver Ability Assessment set by The Blake School
  • Ability to perform duties in various weather conditions
  • Capacity to evacuate students from the bus in emergencies
  • No physical impairments that would hinder the operation of a school bus
  • No medical history that could affect the ability to safely operate a school bus
  • Willingness to undergo drug testing as required by the school
