Position Overview:

As a pivotal member of the engineering team, the Lead Mechanical Systems Engineer will report directly to the Associate Director of Engineering & Energy Management. This role offers the opportunity to exercise considerable autonomy while providing technical leadership, project oversight, and specialized knowledge in mechanical and energy systems that support the institution's capital initiatives and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Engage in the planning, design, construction, and commissioning of various projects managed by the capital projects division. Assess the contributions of design professionals to ensure alignment with institutional objectives, design standards, operational efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. Provide constructive feedback and support to project managers and design teams on all engineering design aspects.

2. Oversee the commissioning process for newly constructed and renovated mechanical systems, which includes reviewing functional acceptance test protocols, participating in on-site testing, and collaborating with operations staff to ensure systems are user-friendly and maintainable.

3. Lead intricate engineering projects by collaborating with qualified external engineering consultants and contractors. Develop comprehensive work scopes and/or requests for proposals to facilitate project execution. Supervise engineering consultants and contractors to guarantee high-quality project outcomes while adhering to established timelines and budgets.

4. Assist operational teams in diagnosing and resolving mechanical system issues, providing effective solutions to enhance operational performance.

5. Conceptualize and develop projects aimed at upgrading or enhancing mechanical systems.

6. Evaluate and recommend enhancements to campus automation systems as necessary, initiating projects to optimize building performance.

7. Contribute to the financial planning for projects and capital expenditures.

8. Undertake additional responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in Engineering along with a minimum of eight years of relevant experience in the engineering field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Essential Skills:

1. Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, coupled with excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proven experience in managing projects and leading teams of consulting design professionals.

2. Exceptional interpersonal skills with a commitment to fostering productive relationships with staff and teams across the institution, contributing to a collaborative environment.

3. Capacity to adapt to evolving priorities, programs, and organizational objectives while managing multiple projects and deadlines effectively.

4. Eagerness to learn and grow in the role, staying informed about industry best practices, training opportunities, and innovative technical solutions to complex building and campus system challenges.

5. Commitment to promoting proactive energy management and climate action strategies across projects of varying scales and scopes.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in building system design and operation, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and building automation systems and equipment, energy performance modeling, and compliance with regulatory frameworks; familiarity with central utilities and cogeneration plants, plant equipment, distribution, and metering; commissioning experience from project inception through turnover, along with performance diagnostics.

Preferred Certifications:

Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Energy Manager (CEM), or LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP).
