Job Summary:

Penn Medicine is seeking a highly skilled Pathologist Assistant II to join the Department of Anatomic Pathology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining accession records, assisting pathologists and residents in processing and dissection of gross anatomic findings, and performing computer data entry and verification procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain accession records according to established procedures
  • Correctly accession, label, fix, and direct specimens received in the gross room
  • Determine when and what action is required to ensure accuracy in the processing of surgical pathology specimens
  • Perform grossing with description and dissection that is clear, concise, and complete
  • Enhance efficiency, production, and output with appropriate task prioritization
  • Ensure specimen receipt with identification verification procedures
  • Evaluate specimen condition while maintaining specimen integrity
  • Coordinate accession activities with the clerical staff along with other professional staff
  • Perform quality audits as required
  • Ensure that proper supplies are available and maintain a clean, sterile working area
  • Keep supplies at acceptable levels
  • Maintain instruments at top performance
  • Perform PM according to manufacturer's recommendation and department policy
  • Perform duties in an independent manner
  • Recognize and perform duties which need to be performed
  • Regularly help others
  • Willingly accept and perform new or added tasks as assigned by the supervisor
  • Consistently report to supervisor any suggestions or positive changes/recommendations to departmental policies/procedures
  • Strive to always put time to good use
  • Work well with supervisors and those in authority
  • Work at establishing a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all members of the laboratory
  • Maintain a positive rapport with medical staff and hospital personnel
  • Communicate in a highly professional manner at all times
  • Comply with Hospital and Laboratory Safety Requirements
  • Report hazards to the Safety Office or Supervisor when found
  • Complete mandatory in-services on or before the due date
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate staffing on all three shifts, weekends, and holidays

Credentials:

Pathologist Assistant

PA Certification by a minimum standards exam, such as the Board of Certification (ASCP) or equivalent, or 5 years of experience as a Pathology Assistant (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

Bachelor of Arts or Science in biological, chemical sciences or health science related field (Required)

Master of Arts or Science (Preferred)

Pathology AssistantEquivalent Experience (Required)

1+ years Experience as a Pathology Assistant in an appropriate setting (Preferred)

Extensive knowledge of gross and surgical anatomy, dissection technique, histologic processing methods and nomenclature (Preferred)

Prior experience with Laboratory Information Systems (Preferred)
