Job Summary:

Sell general merchandise to customers utilizing professional sales techniques. Collaborate with the sales team to provide exceptional customer service, anticipating and exceeding customer expectations. Assist in ensuring the full operation of the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar, including opening and closing the bar, preparing and displaying merchandise, replenishing goods, and cleaning stations and equipment as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Engage customers in conversation to provide sales-related assistance, assist in selecting merchandise, and suggest additional items to complement customer selections. Offer extended product warranties and explain coverage benefits and prices.
  • Interact with customers and coworkers in a friendly and professional manner, adhering to Navy Exchange dress code and uniform standards, and assist supporting sales team members as needed.
  • Become knowledgeable about merchandise, including proper setup, use, and care, and communicate product-related information to customers knowledgeably and legibly.
  • Ensure assigned areas are fully stocked and merchandise is neatly arranged, and communicate with supervisors and store managers regarding stock additions, deletions, fast and slow-selling merchandise, customer preferences, and needs.
  • Complete sales transactions efficiently, thank customers for their patronage, and perform cash register transactions accurately and procedurally.
  • Advise customers of upcoming sales, events, and services available throughout the Navy Exchange, offer NEXCARD account opportunities, and inform customers of NEXCARD account benefits.
  • Become knowledgeable in Navy Exchange store policies, including Richter Merchandising System functions and operation, merchandise returns, price matching, check cashing, rain checks, and handle customer returns and problems tactfully and efficiently.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness in assigned areas and offer excellent customer service to all patrons to deter theft.
  • Unpack, stage, and move merchandise as assigned, assist in creating store displays, and perform periodic inventories.
  • Complete paperwork associated with merchandise inventory/movement, price adjustments, customer returns, cash register operation, and other related duties as assigned.
  • Eligible for and participate in applicable commission and gain-sharing sales incentive programs.
  • Required to lift up to 25 lbs. as it relates to job duties, including assisting customers, lifting merchandise, and assisting with stocking sales areas as necessary.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Open and close the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar.
  • Ensure all equipment is turned on during opening and turned off during closing.
  • Preheat and display products in heated display merchandisers.
  • Ensure sufficient goods and products are readily available for customers by replenishing products and condiments.
  • Ensure all products remaining at the close of business are time-dated when placed in the refrigerator.
  • Ensure cleaning of small wares/equipment throughout the day and at closing.
  • Monitor the temperature on refrigerators and freezers a minimum of 3 times daily.
  • May be required to attend a 4-hour food safety training session initially and an annual refresher thereafter.

This position is represented by the American Federation of Government Employees, Local 53.

No experience required. High school graduate or equivalent preferred.
