About the Department

The Homelessness Prevention Administration (HPA) is committed to assisting New Yorkers in maintaining their housing stability. Collaborating with various organizations, including the Department of Homeless Services (DHS) and the NYC Housing Authority (NYCHA), HPA aims to support families and individuals in securing and sustaining affordable housing.

Position Responsibilities

The Rental Assistance Unit / Legal Services (RAU) is looking to fill two positions for Associate Benefits Opportunity Specialists II, who will serve as Rental Assistance Case Consultants. Key responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating requests for rent arrears and other housing-related emergencies.
  • Assessing exceptions to policy requests from Family Independence Administrations (FIA) Benefits Access Centers (BAC).
  • Reviewing submissions from legal providers and authorizing payments for assistance with rent arrears and emergency housing grants.
  • Processing payment authorizations to prevent eviction.
  • Providing alternatives to help maintain housing for both public and non-public assistance individuals and families.
  • Intervening in urgent cases to avert eviction and maintaining detailed logs of activities in the Rental Assistance Database (RAD).

Work Schedule

Various schedules are available, including 9 AM to 5 PM and 10 AM to 6 PM.

Qualifications

1. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, along with three years of full-time satisfactory experience in social/human services or a related field, providing either:

  • a) Client services.
  • b) Employment planning/counseling services, including job development, skills assessment, and employment placement.

2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, plus eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist.

3. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, plus eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience in social/human services as described above.

4. College credits from an accredited institution may substitute for work experience on a basis of 60 semester credits for 9 months of the described experience. However, all candidates must have at least 18 months of full-time satisfactory experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist or in social/human services.
