Position OverviewThe Sterile Processing Technician Level II is responsible for the meticulous decontamination, cleaning, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution of medical and surgical equipment and supplies, adhering to the guidelines set forth by CDC, OSHA, EPA, AAMI, Title 22, APIC, SGNA, and JC.
Key Responsibilities- Process orders from various departments efficiently.
- Conduct equipment rounds, ensuring the return of soiled items to the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) and cleaning them according to manufacturer specifications.
- Manage phone communications professionally.
- Maintain inventory levels and restock supplies, including specialty carts, in accordance with departmental policies.
- Facilitate the ordering of specialized beds and patient equipment as per medical center protocols.
- Disassemble, clean, and decontaminate surgical instruments, following manufacturer guidelines.
- Assemble, inspect, test, wrap, and date all operating room sets, including specialty sets, in line with departmental standards.
- Operate various equipment within the Sterile Processing Department, including steam sterilizers and automated endoscope reprocessors.
- Utilize instrument and equipment tracking systems to document tests and sterilizer records.
- Ensure the integrity of sterile packages is maintained.
- Prepare operating room case carts based on preference cards for surgical procedures.
- Enhance customer service for both internal and external clients.
- Collaborate effectively within a team environment.
- Perform additional related duties as assigned within the scope of training and service.
- A minimum of two (2) years of recent experience as a Sterile Processing Technician in an acute hospital setting, or as a Surgical Technician with equivalent experience in a Sterile Processing Department.
- High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
- Completion of an accredited Sterile Processing Program, including 400 clinical hours, or a Surgical Technician program.
- Certification from the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, Registered Central Service Technician Certificate, or Surgical Technologist Certificate.
- Fundamental knowledge of instrument processing techniques, including decontamination, assembly, and sterilization.
- Familiarity with Sterile Processing Department policies and procedures, including infection control practices and sterilization methods.
- Understanding of medical, nursing, and surgical supplies and equipment.
- Ability to distinguish colors and respond to audible alarms.
- Strong multitasking and prioritization skills in a fast-paced environment.
