Job Summary:

The Clinical/Mental Health Counselor will provide support to students in grades 9-12, focusing on their social and emotional needs. This role is an integral part of the Counseling Team, working closely with families, colleagues, and administrators to ensure the well-being of students.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide counseling services to students on an as-needed or emergency basis
  • Consult with families and refer them to outside mental health services when necessary
  • Develop collaborative relationships with outside therapists to support families seeking therapy
  • Communicate with parents individually regarding their child's developmental or mental health concerns
  • Establish a compassionate, confidential, and collaborative environment with students, families, colleagues, and administrators
  • Work with the counseling team to address mental health issues within the community
  • Provide guidance and expertise on developmental, cognitive, and psycho-social issues affecting children and adolescents
  • Offer on-call mental health services, including during school hours
  • Maintain accurate records and care notes of counseling sessions and family communication, adhering to CT Law and Kent School Health Center policy
  • Create an inclusive environment for students with diverse cultural backgrounds and varying levels of health and wellness literacy
  • Collaborate with the Director of Counseling, Kent's Consulting Psychiatrist, and other clinical professionals for diagnostic and management assistance as needed

Requirements:

  • Masters degree in a mental health discipline and at least 5 years of experience working with adolescents, preferably in an independent school setting
  • Current CT license in a mental health field
  • LCSW preferred, LMFT and LPC accepted

Desirable Qualities:

  • Experience in providing psychological therapy support in a diverse high school setting and/or with adolescents and families
  • Effective communication skills with colleagues, parents, and families
  • Strong knowledge of ethical and legal considerations related to counseling
  • Experience in treating adolescents with CBT and DBT evidence-based modalities

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands of this role include working in an office environment, standing or sitting for extended periods, and using a keyboard.

  • Successful completion of post-offer, pre-employment criminal background checks and drug test
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance
  • Work in a smoke-free environment
