Key Responsibilities
- Oversees the strategic execution of intricate fire management operations in dynamic environments, ensuring optimal allocation of resources, equipment, and aerial support.
- Provides leadership during both initial and prolonged fire response efforts, directing the activities and strategies of dispersed firefighting teams and resources.
- Responsible for comprehensive long-term fire management planning initiatives.
- Advises and supports the unit agency administrator with expert guidance.
- Facilitates teamwork in the creation of local and annual operational plans, offering technical direction for the implementation of master plans across the organization.
- Conducts inspections of fire management operations to ensure compliance with established plans, regulations, and standards, maintaining an effective firefighting force.
- Develops and sustains overarching fire management strategies for complex fire programs encompassing various activities.
- Ensures that the fuels management program aligns with ecosystem management principles and land management strategies, while assessing impacts on air quality standards.
Employment Conditions

- Passing a pre-employment physical and work capacity test for arduous roles is required.
- Selected candidates will undergo drug screening and must pass prior to appointment, with ongoing random testing required.
- This position may require regular overtime and shift work during peak fire seasons.
- A valid state driver's license is necessary for this role.
Qualifications
Specialized Experience Requirements: To qualify for this position, candidates must demonstrate specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level, which includes analyzing and applying fire management strategies, evaluating prescribed fire and fire management plans, and assessing preparedness actions in wildland fire management.
Experience includes both paid and unpaid work, including volunteer roles through National Service programs and other organizations, which can provide valuable skills applicable to this position.
Selective Placement Factors: This role requires specific qualifications essential for performing duties and will be used as a screening criterion. Candidates must meet the minimum qualification standards for the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard.
To meet IFPM requirements, candidates must possess the following National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) incident management qualifications:
- Pathway #1: Division Group Supervisor (DIVS) and either Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3) or Prescribed Burn Boss Type 2 (RXB2).
- Pathway #2: Air Support Group Supervisor (ASGS) and Incident Commander Type 3 (ICT3).
Additionally, candidates must complete Fire Program Management (M-581) training within one year of their start date.
Physical Demands: The role is primarily sedentary but may require extended hours during fire emergencies, including field assignments that involve standing or walking over rough terrain.
Work Environment: Most tasks are performed in an office setting, with field assignments at fire locations, exposing employees to smoke and adverse weather conditions. Frequent travel by small fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft may be necessary.
