Job Overview

Position: Accounting Technician

Salary: $18.26/hour + DOE

Work Schedule: Intermittent (0-19 hours/week)

Location: Chesapeake, VA - Headquarters

Eligibility: Open to all candidates

Key Responsibilities:

Under supervision, the incumbent will engage in a variety of general accounting functions to compile, prepare, review, and verify financial and statistical records supporting the Finance Directorate.

The role involves:

  • Creating, organizing, maintaining, and updating files and records using database and spreadsheet software, along with other online applications and manual systems.
  • Maintaining an audit trail of documents and records.
  • Generating report formats and preparing necessary accounting and financial reports based on retrieved data as requested.
  • Developing and maintaining spreadsheets, journals, ledgers, logs, worksheets, and other records.
  • Classifying accounting transactions, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of accounting data.
  • Summarizing transactions and preparing control documents or other posting documents reflecting the entries to be made.
Client Interaction:

Providing technical support to both internal and external clients by collecting and delivering specialized information, answering inquiries, and assisting clients in interpreting and adhering to proper accounting procedures. The role also includes training other staff on compliance with procedures, rules, and regulations.

Data Analysis:

Abstracting data that reflects financial conditions and operational results, presenting this data in the form of statements and reports. The incumbent will examine accounts to verify accuracy and adequacy of supporting data, preparing worksheets or reports that reflect examinations made, discrepancies noted, and corrective entries required to adjust accounts.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Two years of progressively responsible experience demonstrating knowledge of accepted accounting principles and practices, experience with accounting software, and performing accounting duties.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Excel.
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An Associate's Degree in accounting from an accredited institution.

Additional Information:
