Role Overview

As the Director of Research and Development, you will spearhead and oversee the execution of our product development strategy, ensuring that all development initiatives align with our strategic goals. Your focus will encompass product launches, process enhancements, cost efficiencies, customer engagement, and ensuring that all activities are conducted in accordance with business and corporate policies regarding safety, quality, and regulatory compliance. The Director of R&D will possess expertise in developing both dry and wet products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Interpret and analyze strategic business objectives related to product development, implementing a cohesive product development strategy that aligns with corporate direction and promotes sustainable revenue growth.
  • Collaborate with custom development teams to create a synergistic pipeline that positions Solina as a market leader.
  • Assess concept reporting and launch/lifecycle proposals based on consumer insights, fostering a sustainable innovation pipeline.
  • Exhibit entrepreneurial leadership by mentoring and developing staff.
  • Facilitate local and cross-functional partnerships, ensuring knowledge sharing to enhance product development speed, quality, and success.
  • Establish and nurture positive relationships with external clients.
  • Organize, prioritize, plan, execute, and document R&D project activities to meet obligations while addressing technical challenges.
  • Provide technical leadership and guidance in resolving issues related to processing, ingredients, and regulatory compliance within R&D.
  • Evaluate current and emerging technologies to recommend process improvements for cost savings and product enhancement.
  • Stay informed on significant technical aspects and food flavor trends, leading the company's research and development staff in necessary project planning, testing, and implementation for both new and legacy consumer products to maintain competitive advantage.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of regulatory labeling, microbiology, and sauce formulation.
  • Perform any additional duties as assigned by management.

Qualifications

We consider any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary skills and knowledge for successful job performance. Typical qualifications include:

  • Preferred supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience in a manufacturing setting is advantageous.

Essential Skills

  • 5-8 years of experience in product development or a closely related field within the food industry, with direct management of large technical teams.
  • Proficient in developing both dry and wet products.
  • Experience with working sessions, plant trials, and addressing customer complaints.
  • Familiarity with provision or Genesis programs.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities, providing innovative solutions to meet customer needs.
  • Experience in setting annual budgets, monitoring expenses, and managing the financial aspects of a technical department/group.
  • Academic background in food science with product development, new technology creation, and food manufacturing experience, particularly in salad dressings, sauces, dips, glazes, or other oil-in-water emulsion systems.
  • Skilled in creating and delivering presentations to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly SharePoint, Excel, and Word.
  • Adept at reading and writing technical/scientific correspondence.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships with all stakeholders, demonstrating strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
