Key Responsibilities
  • Examine damaged vehicles and transit buses to determine the extent of damage and estimate repair costs
  • Read design specifications and blueprints to determine the type of repair and tools required
  • Estimate repair costs based on familiarity with standard parts, costs, and labor rates
  • Read design specifications or examine sample parts to determine fabrication procedures and machines and tools required
  • Install, replace, or repair parts such as body panels, doors, interior and exterior trim, and other components
  • Remove rivets and other fasteners to facilitate removal of defective parts using a power drill and punch
  • Reinstall repaired or replacement parts for subsequent riveting or welding using clamps and wrenches
  • Position and secure bonded structure in fixture or bonding form
  • Scribe around repair area and cut out defective or damaged section using power tools and equipment
  • Weld with gas and arc equipment to replace part to frame
  • Align frames after repairing
  • Repair damaged fiberglass bodies using pneumatic tools
  • Prepare vehicles surfaces for paint application by removing parts, masking areas, and sanding
  • Paint vehicles surfaces through spray application or other means
  • Fabricate and assemble metal products
  • Maintain the shop and work area in a clean, orderly, and neat condition
  • Maintain record of work performed and parts used
  • Provide emergency road service to disabled vehicles as required
Requirements
  • Possession of a valid California driver's license
  • Ability to obtain a California Class B permit within 2 weeks of employment and a California Class B license within 6 months of employment
  • Possession of a personal toolbox, basic hand tool set, and air tools
  • Three years of progressively responsible and varied journey-level work experience performing skilled paint and body repair work on bus, automotive, and other power-driven equipment
  • Knowledge of advanced techniques and methods of surface preparation, painting, and application of materials related to vehicle bodywork
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, and equipment used in maintaining and repairing body and chassis damaged vehicles and related equipment
  • Knowledge of fabrication procedures
  • Knowledge of principles and methods of gas and electrical welding
  • Knowledge of recordkeeping methods and procedures
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
