Overview

The Downtown Seattle Association (DSA) is dedicated to fostering a thriving and dynamic downtown environment for Seattle.

For over six decades, DSA has offered vision and leadership on pivotal issues and opportunities affecting Seattle's urban landscape, encompassing economic vitality, transportation, housing, and the enhancement of the downtown public space.

As a member-driven organization, a primary focus of DSA is to promote economic vitality and advocate for the interests of downtown businesses, nonprofits, and residents.

DSA collaborates closely with municipal and county leaders, neighborhood organizations, nonprofits, and governmental bodies to champion affordable housing, improved transportation solutions, and the creation of an appealing and accessible downtown for businesses, employees, residents, and visitors.


The Senior Vice President of Community Advocacy & Economic Strategy plays a crucial executive role in steering these initiatives for the organization.

This position reports directly to the President & CEO.

General Summary


The Senior Vice President of Community Advocacy & Economic Strategy is responsible for overseeing the organizational strategy and leading advocacy efforts and economic development projects.


Key Responsibilities:
1. Lead a team in developing and managing all initiatives related to economic development, government relations, and public policy.

2. Spearhead the creation of DSA's legislative agendas by engaging with members, the board of directors, and business leaders.

3. Formulate and implement strategies to ensure the success of DSA's public affairs agenda and legislative goals.


4. Collaborate with the DSA board of directors to define the organization's stance on various emerging public policy matters and ballot initiatives.

5. Represent DSA and its membership during legislative sessions and provide testimony as necessary.

6. Drive the content of DSA's policy and advocacy programming and events.

7. Oversee the public affairs and economic development team, ensuring alignment with DSA's mission and objectives.

8. Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with elected officials, senior public agency personnel, media, and other policymakers.


9. Develop and sustain strong partnerships with other downtown organizations that share aligned interests and public policy concerns, including local chambers, economic development entities, transportation advocates, retail and hospitality associations, developers, social service and affordable housing providers, and arts and culture organizations.


10. Act as a key member of DSA's Senior Leadership Team, influencing overall strategic planning, budgeting, direction, and organizational work programs.


Minimum Qualifications:
1. A minimum of five (5) years of experience in public policy, government relations, or economic development.

2. Proven leadership skills demonstrated in the public policy sector.

3. Familiarity with municipal and county government structures and legislative processes.

4. Knowledge of state and federal political processes is also preferred.

5. Experience in grassroots advocacy, community organizing, and lobbying.

6. Ability to exercise strategic judgment and diplomacy in diverse public situations and high-profile matters.

7. Capacity to collaborate with various stakeholders, including business leaders, public officials, and community representatives.

8. Extensive knowledge of community issues.

9. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

10. Excellent collaboration and consensus-building abilities.

11. Well-developed presentation and facilitation skills.

12. Ability to effectively represent DSA, its mission, and its values.

Specialized Skills:
Experience with software and/or Windows-based applications, including word processing, databases, internet, and email, is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Work Environment: Office setting.

Physical Demands: Standing, walking, bending, crouching. Must be able to lift 25 pounds.

Employment Details

Salary determination is based on internal and market equity, data/salary ranges, and the applicant's relevant knowledge, skills, and experience.
