Clinical Practice Supervisor Job Description

The Clinical Practice Supervisor is a key member of the Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) team, responsible for ensuring the efficient flow of patient care operations. Reporting directly to the Nurse Manager, this role oversees the day-to-day clinical flow operations for Medical Assistants, including managing and improving functions of patient flow, staff notification, clinical competencies, POC lab management, daily schedules, onboarding new staff, and inventory control.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Ensure efficiency and productivity with respect to clinical functions of the Medical Assisting staff.
  • Monitor accuracy of POCT and make recommendations for improvements/enhancements for specimen processing and lab efficiencies.
  • Monitor policy and procedure compliance as it relates to the duties of the Medical Assistant.
  • Identify problems with flow and meeting patient's needs, and identify potential improvements to better serve care access for patients.
  • Demonstrate excellent discretion and judgment needed to act independently with decision-making responsibilities.
  • Manage telephone services according to departmental standards, and hospital service standards.
  • Oversee ordering all necessary clinical supplies and equipment for the practice to ensure availability prior to their arrival while being fiscally conscious.
  • Responsible for use and oversight of all clinical inventory, including vaccines and their storage.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality according to hospital standards.
  • Assure compliance with BWH, BWPO, TJC, CLIA, state, and federal regulations.
Human Resource Responsibilities:
  • Supervisory responsibility of approximately 25 FTEs. May vary with the needs of the practice.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and oversee implementation of Medical Assistant and employee policies.
  • Participate in the selection of new MA staff and in the coordination of orientation and onboarding.
  • Participate in the preparation and delivery of yearly performance appraisals with the Nurse Manager.
  • Responsible for annual clinical competencies and Health Stream monitoring with Nurse Manager, as needed, for Medical Assistants.
  • Development and training of MA competencies and processes to improve quality of patient experience. Identify quality issues.
  • Delegate duties to others in the department based on skills and workload.
  • With Practice Leadership, conduct staff meetings and compile and communicate meeting minutes.
  • Work with daily schedules and provider coverage, monitor vacation requests and coverage.
  • Assure appropriate staffing and coverage to meet all needs. Assist with or provide coverage when staffing levels are not sufficient.
Other Responsibilities:
  • Participate and lead special projects as assigned by the Nurse Manager, maintain flexibility regarding workload and the needs of the department.
  • Act as intermediary between physicians and staff.
  • May be asked to cross-cover in various FXB Multispecialty clinics as needed.
