Position Overview:

The Chief Counsel will serve as the primary legal authority based in the United States, specifically in Houston, Texas. This role is integral to the Legal team within our global Sustainability & Governance group, focusing on transactional legal matters.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a legal authority, offering daily guidance and strategic recommendations to the Low Carbon Solutions Business Line.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts for projects valued from millions to billions of dollars, ensuring compliance across various jurisdictions.
  • Represent McDermott as a leader in fostering a positive workplace culture.
  • Provide comprehensive legal support throughout the contract lifecycle.
  • Review and negotiate various agreements to align with McDermott's business objectives, including MOUs, Joint Ventures, and NDAs.
  • Support project execution in diverse jurisdictions while understanding international governing laws.
  • Advise on financial instruments and project finance documentation relevant to ongoing projects.
  • Engage in management reviews, advising on strategic direction and risk management.
  • Prepare and facilitate negotiations for subcontracts and purchase orders.
  • Manage pre-litigation claims and negotiate resolutions with stakeholders.
  • Identify compliance and anti-corruption issues, collaborating with the internal Ethics & Compliance team.
  • Conduct training sessions for various teams, including Supply Chain and Contracts professionals.
  • Work with the Sustainability & Governance team to promote an inclusive culture and implement process enhancements.
  • Assist in translating prime contract requirements into vendor agreements.
  • Draft and finalize agreements with vendors in purchase orders and subcontracts.
  • Participate in industry groups to provide insights and influence legislation pertinent to the Low Carbon Solutions Business Line.

Essential Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in the United States, preferably in Texas or Louisiana.
  • Over 7 years of extensive legal experience in the energy or construction sectors, with a focus on management, contract drafting, and negotiation.
  • Fluency in Spanish, including legal terminology.
  • Adept at navigating complex organizational structures.
  • Comfortable managing ambiguity and complexity.
  • Proven ability to collaborate with executive leadership and board members.
  • Experience working in both the U.S. and South America.
  • Demonstrated success in leading teams within large, international corporations.
  • Strong understanding of contract law and related practices.
  • Exceptional writing, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • High ethical standards, sound judgment, and analytical capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel as required.
