Job Overview

The Department of Sustainable Biomaterials (SBIO) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Extension Specialist in Sustainable Biomaterial Marketing. This role is pivotal in shaping future leaders dedicated to the sustainable use of forest-derived and other renewable materials. The forest-based sector in Virginia is a significant contributor to the economy, generating substantial revenue and providing numerous employment opportunities. Our faculty are committed to supporting this vital industry through outreach and education. We are looking for innovative candidates to develop a program that emphasizes both current and emerging biomaterial products, markets, and opportunities, particularly within the state's forest products sector. Ideal candidates will possess expertise in areas such as renewable material market analysis, biomaterial trade, business development, market adaptation strategies, and connecting students with industry stakeholders.

The successful applicant will enhance the outreach and engagement mission of the department and the Land Grant system by delivering accessible, research-driven programs and educational resources aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals, families, businesses, and communities.

Key Responsibilities may include:

• Conducting analyses of biobased materials and energy markets

• Evaluating the impact of policies on market dynamics

• Assisting stakeholders in identifying and developing market opportunities

• Recognizing industry needs and advancing knowledge as product markets evolve

• Supporting businesses in the renewable materials sector

• Formulating sustainable business strategies

• Aiding in the development of business plans

• Facilitating new product development

• Assisting with the analysis and development of export markets

• Evaluating program effectiveness and impact

This position is a tenure-track, 9-month appointment with primary responsibilities allocated to extension (70%) and research (30%). The successful candidate will be expected to create a meaningful extension program and develop an applied research agenda that complements their extension activities. Mentoring and advising graduate students will be an essential part of this role, along with participation in departmental, college, and university activities.

Required Qualifications


• Ph.D. in Sustainable Biomaterials, Forest Products Marketing, Bioproducts Marketing, Operations Management, Business, Forestry, Wood Science, or a related discipline

• Proven ability to secure funding for an active research and extension program

• Capacity to establish and maintain a nationally recognized extension initiative

• Strong communication skills

• Demonstrated ability to publish and present scholarly work

• Proven success in research design, grant writing, and presenting findings at academic conferences.

Preferred Qualifications


• Experience mentoring and supporting both graduate and undergraduate students

• Evidence of engagement with stakeholders, conducting situation analyses, and creating educational content for outreach and training purposes across various delivery methods

• Documented scholarship that aligns with existing sustainable biomaterials programs

• Interest and experience in collaborating with governmental agencies, NGOs, private industry, or a combination of these

• Leadership experience in managing teams

• Ability to work effectively with diverse colleagues and audiences to foster cohesive programs across research and extension missions.

$80,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience
