Job Title: Yard Inspector/Relief Heavy Equipment Operator

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Yard Inspector/Relief Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team at Metalico. As a key member of our operations team, you will be responsible for ensuring a safe work environment, maintaining a clean and organized yard, and performing various tasks related to heavy equipment operation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure a safe work environment for self and others at all times.
  • Keep management aware of any delays or discrepancies.
  • Keep the yard clean, well-organized, and safe.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out simple one or two-step instructions.
  • Inform and communicate with yard personnel.
  • Ensure quality, environmental, and safety standards of Metalico for production, customers, and employees are consistently achieved.
  • Inspect loads for non-conforming materials and communicate with operators and drivers to ensure safe unloading practices of materials.
  • Inspect scrap loads to identify prohibited items, assign correct commodity codes, and assign deductions according to best practices.
  • Inspect customer materials for liquids, non-metallic materials, and other non-acceptable materials.
  • Identify and record inspection data, including weight, grade, content, and quantity of scrap material.
  • Ensure customers drop the correct material in the correct designated areas.
  • Direct drivers to drop-off locations.
  • Communicate via 2-way radio with Weigh Master and yard personnel.
  • Cross-train in other tasks as needed.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned or requested.
  • Must be able to perform a variety of tasks in all kinds of weather and seasons.
  • Required to wear proper PPE (steel-toed boots, hard hats, safety glasses).

Qualifications:

  • High school degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Able to operate bobcats, forklifts, loaders (a plus).
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time.
  • Knowledge of various ferrous and non-ferrous metals (a plus).
  • Quick learner who can follow directions.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Team player.
  • Organized, consistent, and good at multitasking.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to work.
  • Prior to hire, must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug test, and criminal background check.
