Summary:
The Jornada Experimental Range Headquarters invites applications for the role of Environmental Research Specialist. The mission focuses on enhancing sustainability and resilience across diverse land uses in rangelands.

Classification Summary:
Independently interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates research assignments. Formulates and conducts investigations on complex problems.

Explores subject areas and defines the scope and selection of issues for analysis through conceptually related studies or a series of smaller projects.


Classification Standard Duties:


Utilizes comprehensive knowledge of scientific research principles, practices, and protocols in research initiatives; provides recommendations and conclusions that inform decision-making in a specialized area.

Collaborates with stakeholders and principal investigators on the design, analysis, application, and reporting of research projects; instructs and advises on methodologies.

Interprets, organizes, executes, and coordinates scientific research assignments addressing unique or contentious issues.

Conducts systematic problem analysis and resolution in areas of significant scope and complexity through a series of complete and conceptually related studies, or through various smaller projects.

Develops innovative concepts and methodologies as an independent researcher and exercises autonomy on technical matters. Provides technical leadership and consultation to professional colleagues, collaborators, and graduate students. Prepares analyses, reports, and documentation for publication; presents findings at local, national, and/or international conferences. Prepares grant proposals to secure funding for research activities.

Serves as principal investigator on single or multiple projects of complexity and scope consistent with the above criteria, and/or manages a research unit.

Maintains current knowledge of relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and/or systems. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

THIS POSITION IS A ONE YEAR APPOINTMENT, CONTINGENT UPON FUNDING
The position will spearhead innovative research on the factors influencing social-ecological and land use changes in southern New Mexico.

The incumbent's research will develop new modeling techniques to forecast land ownership changes in rangelands utilizing time series of ownership data, spatial data on vegetation, soils, and climate, social and economic variables, and newly acquired survey data.

The incumbent will also document land use changes and perceptions that may encourage the adoption of photovoltaic/agrivoltaics systems.

Modeling will necessitate proficiency in R, ArcGIS/QGIS, Google Earth Engine, Python, and social science methodologies and software, including Q-Sort and choice experiments.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in social science, geography, or environmental science with a suitable background.
  • Experience with land change science and social processes in rangelands.
  • Strong coding and mathematical skills, including writing and executing code on the Google Earth Engine and in R.
  • Experience working with and analyzing land-cover datasets and remote sensing data.
  • Experience with survey design, participatory mapping, and conducting surveys and interviews.
  • Experience integrating survey data with spatial data in statistical analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues across multiple institutions.
  • Record of timely publications.
