Position: Global Methane Research Scientist

Location: Remote options available in the US, Belgium, Netherlands, and London.

The Office of Chief Scientist (OCS) serves as the central hub for scientific inquiry at the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), ensuring that our policy positions are grounded in the most reliable scientific data. OCS provides essential support to all EDF scientists and cultivates partnerships with external scientific communities.

EDF is committed to a significant reduction in global methane emissions from the oil and gas sector, aiming for a 45% decrease by 2025. This initiative is crucial for mitigating climate change impacts over the next two decades.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct comprehensive research and analysis to support EDF's initiatives aimed at understanding and reducing methane emissions from oil and gas operations.
  2. Design and implement projects focused on quantifying methane emissions throughout the oil and gas supply chain, collaborating effectively with academic and industry partners.
  3. Provide expert guidance on the development of robust measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) frameworks for methane emissions.
  4. Manage and coordinate partnerships with research institutions to enhance scientific collaboration.
  5. Ensure the scientific rigor of initiatives undertaken with a diverse array of stakeholders, including industry representatives, academic institutions, and governmental organizations.
  6. Synthesize and communicate scientific findings to a multidisciplinary team, including policy experts and community engagement specialists.
  7. Support EDF's global initiatives related to methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.
  8. Stay informed on the latest developments in climate science and methane research.
  9. Maintain the scientific integrity of materials produced by EDF.
  10. Contribute to the writing and analysis of research papers for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
  11. Represent EDF at external conferences and engage with the broader scientific community.
  12. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization, ensuring that all individuals feel valued and empowered.
  13. Assist with urgent project needs as they arise.

Qualifications (Required):

  • PhD in atmospheric science, physical sciences, engineering, or a related field, with a minimum of two years of post-doctoral experience.
  • Proven track record of conducting and publishing research focused on methane emissions.
  • Familiarity with methane emission datasets, including in-situ measurements and satellite remote sensing.
  • Experience in coordinating methane measurement campaigns.
  • Strong quantitative analysis capabilities and excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to engage with the scientific community and maintain professional relationships.
  • Experience in delivering high-quality analysis under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to convey complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Commitment to cultural competence and inclusivity in the workplace.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively on multiple projects in a dynamic environment.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with emission inventories and proficiency in statistical analysis.
  • Understanding of atmospheric modeling and willingness to travel internationally (less than 10% of time).
  • Knowledge of current methane MRV frameworks.
