Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Engineer V to join our team at the County of Maui. As a key member of our engineering department, you will be responsible for supervising and participating in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of mechanical equipment and systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, direct, and supervise the installation, maintenance, overhaul, and repair of County plant facilities and operations.
  • Serve as the principal consultant and advisor on technical concerns dealing with mechanical and electric/electrical activities for existing and proposed facilities.
  • Develop, direct, and coordinate the preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance activities of treatment plants and pumping stations.
  • Review, advise upon, and initiate changes to existing plant facilities to correct and prevent mechanical or electrical failure.
  • Make office and field studies of proposed projects and recommend the design, type, and location of equipment.
  • Supervise the installation, testing, and acceptance of new facilities and equipment.
  • Review and recommend approval or disapproval of, and changes to, plans and specifications of proposed projects.
  • Supervise and/or conduct preliminary and final acceptance tests of pumping units and plant facilities.
  • Supervise and/or conduct periodic tests to determine operational efficiency of existing pumping units and plant facilities and recommend corrective action as required.
  • Participate in the review of all modifications to contracts and change orders for maintenance and repair work.
  • Recommend the adoption of new technology and programs, including cost-benefit studies, in-service training, and safety programs.
  • Inspect repair work, new projects, and contract work.
  • Prepare technical reports and correspondence.
Requirements
  • A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and one year of registered professional mechanical engineering experience.
  • Possession of a certificate of registration as a professional mechanical engineer in the State of Hawaii.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, and techniques of mechanical engineering, including engineering mechanics, mechanics of materials, machine design, thermo-dynamics, and hydraulics.
  • Ability to apply mechanical engineering principles, interpret, apply, and modify guidelines and precedents, and review and analyze plans and specifications.
