Position Overview

The McConnell Group, Inc. (TMG) is in search of dedicated Animal Research Technicians to assist in the implementation of animal care and usage protocols. The role requires a commitment to high standards of animal welfare and compliance with regulatory guidelines.


Essential Qualifications:

  1. An associate degree in biological sciences is required, along with a minimum of three years of experience in laboratory animal research or five years in hands-on animal healthcare.
  2. Ability to effectively prepare for surgical procedures and conduct necropsies on various small and large animal species.
  3. Demonstrated proficiency in both oral and written communication skills.
  4. Competence in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and SharePoint is essential.
  5. Physical capability to stand for extended periods and lift equipment weighing up to 30 pounds.
  6. Flexibility in scheduling to accommodate the demands of research activities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. A degree in a field related to animal sciences, health sciences, or allied sciences is preferred.
  2. Certification from the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) or Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) is highly desirable.
  3. Experience working with non-human primates in a research environment for at least three years is preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in necropsy procedures, including the collection and labeling of biological samples, ensuring proper documentation and cleanup.
  2. Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of cages and racks in accordance with applicable regulations.
  3. Perform essential animal husbandry tasks and develop an environmental enrichment schedule for the animals.
  4. Conduct minor surgical procedures and microsurgery on laboratory animals as required.
  5. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards by maintaining accurate records and documentation.
  6. Collect and analyze experimental data from animals, including vital signs and other necessary tests.
  7. Support the development of standard operating procedures and ensure safety protocols are adhered to.
  8. Notify the Facility/Vivarium Manager of any issues requiring attention or repair.
  9. Manage inventory and order supplies necessary for the vivarium.
  10. Assist in the creation and revision of research documentation, providing regulatory guidance to research personnel.
  11. Coordinate internal and external inspections, tracking deficiencies and reporting to management.
  12. Review research protocols to ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
  13. Maintain electronic databases related to animal research protocols and manage animal inventory.
  14. Adhere to established guidelines for all animal care activities.
  15. Stay informed about regulations and compliance standards relevant to the Animal Care and Use Program.
  16. Provide administrative support to the branch and perform additional duties as assigned.
  17. Conduct health assessments of animals and communicate any health concerns to veterinary staff.
