Environmental Science Educator
Who We Are / Our Mission
Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Georgia Fugees Academy Charter School (Fugees Academy) is dedicated to fostering educational equity for refugee learners and English Language Learners. Our educational model addresses a significant gap not currently filled by conventional public education systems - the education of newcomer (refugee and immigrant) students in a setting where their distinct identities and requirements are embraced and understood.
Our Educational Philosophy / Core Principles
Rooted in the values, frameworks, and shared experiences of soccer, the Fugees philosophy is characterized by a collective commitment to collaboration. On and off the field, Fugees teammates uplift one another to tackle challenges, assume both collective and individual responsibilities, and achieve success together. These Core Principles are evident in every facet of our educational model.
Community and Relationships: Fugees is intentionally designed to be a small and supportive environment that fosters deep connections and community. Every student is recognized personally by teachers, staff, leadership, and peers.
Holistic Development: The integration of expression, movement, and the arts is as vital as academics for overall growth. Social-emotional learning, character development, and student well-being are fundamental to success both in and out of the classroom.
Individualized Support: While being part of a larger team, students and families receive tailored support to meet their unique needs, whether academic, social, emotional, or related services.
Cultural Identity and Celebration: Fugees believes in honoring and embracing students' identities while helping them adapt to U.S. society. The school acknowledges and celebrates the diverse backgrounds and cultures of each student and family, viewing diversity as a strength.
Supportive Accountability: Fugees holds the belief that all students can achieve high standards academically and behaviorally, and they are lovingly held accountable through consistent feedback, genuine consequences, and numerous opportunities for success.
Shared Responsibility: Both students and adults gradually take on greater levels of responsibility for themselves and the broader community. This gradual release of responsibility is designed to help every member of the school develop leadership and life skills.
About Us
Fugees Academy, part of the non-profit organization Fugees Family, Inc., is a tuition-free, community-oriented public charter school aimed at meeting the needs of new American students through English language acquisition, foundational skill development, culturally relevant curriculum, and comprehensive support services. Every student collaborates as a team member both in the classroom and on the field to bridge significant gaps in traditional education and graduate on time. We combine innovative teaching with essential academic skills, intertwined with leadership and character development. The Fugees Instructional Model is trauma-informed and designed to meet students at their current level, focusing on foundational skills often lacking in children whose education has been disrupted.
Once students demonstrate mastery at the 8th-grade level, they progress to high school, where they continue to develop as critical thinkers, community members, and future leaders. Through small class sizes, high expectations, and targeted instruction, Fugees Academy empowers the most vulnerable students—child survivors of conflict—to become independent thinkers and high-achieving scholars. Working collaboratively both on and off the field, members of the Fugees Academy community strive to support one another while pursuing individual goals. The core principles of the school include an extended school day, a low teacher-student ratio, interactive instruction, a comprehensive tutoring program, a soccer-centered athletic program, and extensive support services for students and their families.
Position Overview
Reporting to the School Leader, this is a full-time, 10-month, exempt position. Our program begins with middle school; however, our instructional scope starts with Kindergarten-level material. Most Fugees Academy students enter middle school performing significantly below grade level. The environmental science educator will be integral in helping students develop the essential skills needed to reach grade level by the time they transition to high school. This educator will collaborate with a team committed to collective learning and growth through collaboration and coaching.
This educator may teach middle school and high school environmental science courses; additionally, many of our educators have the opportunity to provide language development support by teaching a section of Language Support. The 7th and 8th-grade environmental science classes utilize the Great Minds curriculum. Our high school students study various scientific disciplines, including biology, physics, chemistry, and environmental science. All educators will employ effective instructional practices for content area literacy, viewing this as an opportunity to enhance language development beyond English class.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver environmental science instruction using diverse lesson presentation techniques to accommodate various learning styles and language proficiency levels, meeting students where they are while adhering to approved curriculum and materials.
- Establish trauma-informed connections to facilitate effective learning.
- Implement classroom management strategies that prioritize mutual respect and positive reinforcement.
- Exhibit outstanding instructional skills, motivating and challenging students effectively.
- Monitor student progress and support students with their 504 plans/IEPs and other individual needs.

- Commit to building authentic relationships with students and families.
- Fulfill duties and expectations in a positive, productive, accurate, and timely manner.
- Be open to coaching, mentoring, feedback, and performance evaluations for professional growth and development.
- Minimum of 2 years of full-time classroom teaching experience, preferably in an urban environment.
- A minimum of an undergraduate degree; a Master's degree is preferred.
- Teaching certification is advantageous.
- Successful experience with reading instruction is preferred.
- Proven ability to create and maintain a warm, yet structured classroom environment.
